Engineering Manager - Incident Management

Paris, France; Madrid, Spain

Incident Management is an SRE team in our Resilience Engineering organization whose mission is to build a culture of resilience by using incidents as learning opportunities and catalysts for growth. We collaborate closely with teams across departments to enhance on-call experience, incident response, and post-incident analysis by reducing friction, providing analysis skills, and optimizing processes. Our efforts empower engineers across Datadog to navigate complexity and unexpected failures with confidence and efficiency.

As an Engineering Manager, you will help us realize this mission by driving cross-functional reliability programs with other stakeholders, building platforms to solve operational problems, and setting up thousands of engineers for success through training and golden paths.

At Datadog, we place value in our office culture - the relationships that it builds, the creativity it brings to the table, and the collaboration of being together. We operate as a hybrid workplace to ensure our employees can create a work-life harmony that best fits them.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead and mentor a team of experienced SREs who are passionate about building a culture of reliability and resilience at Datadog. Help engineers grow to the next level and continuously provide them opportunities to develop.
  • Steer the on-call experience for the company by establishing best practices and building platforms to support on-call rotations and compensation, as well as training engineers in monthly workshops. Support managers adopt practices by providing data and perspective on their teams’ experiences.
  • Represent the interests of incident responders across Datadog by working with product teams to identify and help prioritize features that improve their user experience and efficiency during incidents.
  • Work with stakeholders across Datadog to build consensus on shared topics around incident management – for example collaborating with security teams to ensure our global process is consistent and well-adopted.
  • Build a culture of continuous learning by incentivising engineers to invest in incident analysis, write postmortems, and commit to fixing systemic problems. Help the organization track common themes or emergent trends.

Who You Are:

  • 2-3 years experience as a people manager or as a technical leader with strong mentorship skills. Ideally candidates will have experience in career development, performance management, tracking and optimizing team velocity, sprint planning, OKRs, and hiring.
  • 2-3 years experience in the SRE or incident management domain. Most of our work involves building culture and a community of practice for incidents, so being able to understand pain points from an engineer’s point of view is important.
  • Technical pragmatism and an ability to help the team reason about trade-offs around implementation. You will often review the decisions and RFCs from senior engineers, and you will need to blend both your technical and business acumen to do this.
  • Strong distributed systems knowledge. While we are not in the critical path for customer-facing infrastructure, we support people who are, so we need to leverage our technical experience to build credibility. We frequently read postmortems and offer suggestions, so you will need a good technical baseline.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills. This will involve using your empathy, collaboration, and communication skills in English to work remotely with people across teams. Because our programs touch lots of different parts of the business, we frequently collaborate with stakeholders across Datadog and need to motivate teams to work together towards a shared goal.

Datadog values people from all walks of life. We understand not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you’re passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply.
