Manager I, Engineering - SRE Production Practices

Paris, France; Madrid, Spain

Production Practices is a new SRE team in our Resilience Engineering organization whose mission is to steward production readiness standards throughout the software development lifecycle at Datadog. As advocates of this end-to-end developer experience at Datadog, we aim to lower the effort and time needed from the ideation of a service to its general availability, and make it easier for engineers to build reliable and resilient systems from the get go. We also help these teams to identify, track, and mitigate emergent reliability risks across their systems in a sustainable and efficient way.

As an Engineering Manager, you will help us realize this mission by continuing to build out the SRE team and actively drive cross-functional reliability programs that have a positive impact on large sections of the company.

At Datadog, we place value in our office culture - the relationships that it builds, the creativity it brings to the table, and the collaboration of being together. We operate as a hybrid workplace to ensure our employees can create a work-life harmony that best fits them.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead and mentor a team of experienced SREs who are passionate about building a culture of reliability at Datadog.
  • Build platforms and tooling that solve real user problems and allow us to support our engineers throughout the full software development lifecycle. Around 30-50% of your time will be spent doing hands-on technical work.
  • Work with stakeholders across Datadog to build consensus on shared topics like risk management and production readiness.
  • Build a culture of SRE across Datadog by distributing best practices and training other engineers on reliability topics and domain expertise.
  • Help Datadog track its engineering risks, prioritize them with other leaders, and organize cross-functional squads to fix them with hands-on technical work.

Who You Are:

  • 2 years experience as a people manager or technical leader with strong mentorship skills. Ideally candidates will have experience in career development, performance management, tracking and optimizing team velocity, sprint planning, OKRs, and hiring.
  • 1-2 years experience in the SRE domain. Most of our work involves building culture and a community of practice, so pragmatic knowledge of reliability fundamentals is expected.
  • Good coding skills in Go and/or Python. We automate as many manual processes as possible and use code to scale our impact. Our managers are expected to take a hands-on role when necessary: writing and reviewing software, as well as setting technical direction with design docs.
  • Strong distributed systems knowledge. While we don’t run or are on-call for customer-facing infrastructure, we interact frequently with people who do, so we need to leverage our technical experience to build credibility. Our work involves reviewing unfamiliar services before they launch and helping the Chaos team coordinate large-scale game days, so we rely on our systems thinking and familiarity with common production patterns.
  • Empathy, collaboration, and communication skills in English to work remotely with people across teams. Because our programs touch lots of different parts of the business, we frequently collaborate with stakeholders across Datadog and need to motivate teams to work together towards a shared goal.
  • Experience or general awareness of risk management and other general topics which lie at the intersection of reliability and compliance.

Datadog values people from all walks of life. We understand not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you’re passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply.
