The APM Team at Datadog provides mission critical application health and performance monitoring for customers of all sizes and industries. We’re looking for an engineering manager to help build tracing libraries for Java, integrating with, and occasionally contributing to, the various Java language runtimes. You’ll manage several talented engineers and do some of your own coding. Come and join us to build amazing open-source software!

What You’ll Do:

• You will build open-source code that instruments thousands of Java applications around the world.
• Drive our open-source Java projects and engage with Java the community. 
• This is a hybrid role: you’ll spend time on management, and also doing hands-on technical work.
• You’ll work with and mentor the engineers on your team. This might mean reviewing an RFC or discussing areas where they want to grow or have gaps, and supporting them in developing those skills. You’ll help foster a high-performance and fun culture.
• You’ll contribute to our distributed tracing libraries – adding cutting-edge functionality and debugging tricky problems.
• You’ll help us continue to raise the bar on the quality of our code and the stability of our libraries.
• You’ll help define priorities and build out the roadmap, along with your team, product manager, and other stakeholders.

Who You Are:

• You have excellent communication skills and are emotionally intelligent.
• You have good knowledge of Java and Java Ecosystem. It is a bonus if you have experience with C/C++, experience with run times and/or have experience working with Byte Code Instrumentations.
• You’re attentive to details and can build software with very low defect rates. You appreciate simplicity as a tool to accomplish this.
• You’ve used distributed tracing or done other forms of observability and know how to write efficient software.
• You’re interested in an environment that values shipping early and iterating, and keeping processes to the minimum needed to ensure safety. You enjoy owning projects and can keep moving forward despite the occasional ambiguity or blocker.
